The most basic algebra skill is creating equations and inequalities for x. The questions in the SAT for this are both multiple-choice and open-ended. Usually, they will be word problems. Now, before you groan, these word problems can be easily solved if you take out the parts. First, some vocabulary you will need to know to understand the wording of the problems:

  • linear equation - an equation where each term is either a constant or the product of a constant and 1 variable. When graphed, a linear equation forms a straight line, hence linear.
  • slope-a number defining the steepness or how much the y-value changes as the x-value changes. It also shows the direction a linear graph is moving.
  • linear graph- a linear equation plotted on a graph in a straight line.
To construct a linear equation, we will use the most basic form, slope-intercept form. Slope-intercept form uses the equation y= mx+b.
